Repair Or Replace Your Tire: Know When It's Time For Tire Replacement

You can expect anywhere from 25,000 miles to 50,000 miles of life out of your tires, but this is a wide range to consider. On a vehicle driven an average of 15,000 miles a year, this means you will need new tires every three to four years. If you drive less miles, the age of your tires can become an issue and still need to be replaced. When there is damage to a tire from a puncture, where the puncture occurs and the size of it will determine whether you can repair or replace your tire. If you get a flat tire or you notice that the tread on your tires seems low, it's time to seek tire replacement services.

When You Get a Flat Tire

A flat tire caused by a sharp object, such as a nail, may be able to be repaired. If the puncture is on the tread and the hole that was made is small, the tire can usually be repaired. If your tire was damaged on the side of the tire, you will need to get your tire replaced. Once you put on your spare tire, bring the damaged tire to your tire service to see if the tire can be fixed.

Check the Tread on Your Tire

Tires without enough tread can be a hazard on the road, especially in wet or slippery conditions. In general, if you place a penny in the tread of your tire and the penny won't stay there, you probably need to have your tires replaced. Bald tires are fairly obvious, and can cause you to fail an inspection.

Looking for Tire Damage

There are times when your tire can get damaged without popping. If you hit a curb, or a pothole too hard, your tire can get a bubble or dent in it that doesn't go away. If you notice any damage to your tire after you hit something, bring your car in for tire service to see if you need to have a repair done. Check your tires periodically, and always pay attention to the warning light on your vehicle that indicates low pressure.

The tires on your car will last about three years, or up to 50,000 miles. Anything beyond that, and you could be risking your safety by driving your car with the existing tires. Pay attention to issues with your tires, and get your tires replaced when necessary.
